Hacienda Design Studio is the destination for beautifully designed sustainable materials that enrich every environment. With our unique collection of cement tiles, we unite modern artistry with several centuries of traditional hand craftsmanship and technique.
Hacienda Design Studio was founded by Dana Berkowitz, a New York-based tile industry veteran with vast experience in the design world. In 2008, while pursuing a long-time dream of moving to Mexico to restore an old mansion in the Historic District of Merida, Yucatan, Dana became enamored with cement tile. Her purchase, an 1840’s carriage house, was in complete ruin except for the well-preserved cement tile floors throughout.
Recognizing the under appreciated beauty and durability of this incredible material, Dana set forth to create her own collection with a contemporary design aesthetic. Her greatest challenge was to find artisans who could produce these innovative patterns with high quality precision, yet maintain the old world technique. While Hacienda Design Studio’s name and inspiration were clearly born in Mexico, the artisans best suited to produce this collection are found halfway across the world in Vietnam where their ancestors passed down to them the extraordinary skills that go into making our hand crafted cement tile.
We aim to change the way the world sees cement. With the introduction of our modern cement tile collection, we embrace the need for sustainable, durable and affordable building materials without compromising beauty or luxury. We are thrilled to share with you this wonderfully unique tile collection of incomparable quality.
We are more than just a pretty face. One of the most exciting features of our tile is that it is sustainable and LEED certified. It is handcrafted and air dried, resulting in a green, eco-friendly Product. We use all natural materials, including natural mineral pigments to create the color palette. Unlike stone or ceramic tile, cement tile is neither quarried nor kiln-fired, whereby caring for the environment in every way.
In our commitment to preserving the earth’s natural resources, we also ship our tile in recyclable packaging and aim to limit our brochures and print material wherever possible.
